WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

I’m roasting these beans to the darker end of medium, and you can expect a full and hearty cup with aromas of fresh roasted peanuts and caramelized sugar. THINK: full and hearty like fresh brick toast covered in extra crunchy peanut butter.

ORIGIN STORY

Our HERITAGE SERIES honors my own roots as a first-generation Chinese American and shines a much deserved light on specialty coffee with Chinese and Taiwanese origins. This first (and very limited) release comes at a perfect time as we get ready to celebrate Lunar New Year on February 1st! Every bag of this limited release features a special Year of the Tiger label and is perfect for gifting and/or brewing when the tang yuan and peanut brittle make their way out onto the table.

This coffee comes from Yunnan, the most southwestern province in China. Yunnan is known for its lush green mountain ranges and beautiful rivers that flow through its deep valleys. While Yunnan accounts for only 4.1% of the total land area of China, it’s also home to 50.1% of the country's biological species – making Yunnan the most biodiverse region of the country.

Yunnan’s picturesque and fertile highlands have long been known as the birthplace of Pu-erh tea – a delicate, flavorful, and complex black tea appreciated by tea aficionados (and dim sum diners) worldwide. Today, Pu-erh farmers in Yunnan are starting to use these same lush green mountains to grow specialty coffee, and the results have been spectacular.

The coffee we are featuring for our special Heritage Series “Year of the Tiger” release is from Mr. Li, who owns and operates his own farm in Menglian, Yunnan. Mr. Li is a second-generation coffee farmer and a hometown hero; his coffee farm was one of the few that made it out of a devastating frost in the late 90s, and the farm weathered (and continues to weather) the uncertainty of unstable markets. Today, Mr. Li gives back to the local community by assisting local families with education and medical needs.

We were only able to get our hands on a few pounds of Mr. Li’s coffee beans from this particular harvest, but we’re excited to share what we have and hope you have fun exploring this up-and-coming specialty coffee origin with us. This is only just the beginning for specialty coffee with Chinese & Taiwanese origins, and I can’t wait to roast and share more in the future.

MORE ABOUT THE HERITAGE SERIES

Our Heritage Series honors my roots as a first-generation Chinese American and shines a much deserved light on specialty coffee with Chinese and Taiwanese origins. Forebears has always been about honoring my ancestors, and what better way for me to do that than by roasting coffee and sharing stories from my own motherland. I’m excited to help put specialty coffee from China and Taiwan on the map, one roast at a time.
